Humanity has very practically divided time into seconds and minutes and hours; but the gods have divided time into seasons. Spring is the season of rebirth. Winter is the season of stasis and hibernation. Autumn is the season of Pumpkin Spice and Santa and chaos and stress. And summer is the season of paradise. The sunshine and the outdoors, picnics and roller-coasters, joy and leisure fill the air. The youngsters trapped in classrooms stare out the window dreaming of summertime. The image of Americana is always captured in summer: white-picket fences around green lawns with children and puppies chasing fireflies in the late evening sunsets.

But what Norman Rockwell failed to capture was the sweating, dripping exhaustion. The paralyzing heat and the burning rashes of sun damage always slip from our minds during the cold months. Behind the fantasy of summertime lingers the ever present human curse of suffering and malcontent. Find some shade with Mat, Veronique, and Guest – Natalie Knepp – as we swat away the mosquitos and rub some aloe on the traumatic, suppressed side of Summer!
